Decontamination

After a dermal exposure to a nicotine-containing substance (insecticide, plant or e-cigarette liquid), remove all the patient’s clothing and bathe or shower the patient with soapy water. Dispose of soiled clothing or wash separately.

After ingestion of a nicotine-containing substance, consider gastrointestinal decontamination with activated charcoal for alert and cooperative patients who are able to protect their airway and present within 2 hours after the estimated ingestion time. If the patient is intubated, activated charcoal can be given any time after ingestion via a nasogastric or orogastric tube—confirm correct placement of the nasogastric or orogastric tube beforehand.
