Treatment for novel stimulant drug poisoning
The treatment for novel stimulant drug poisoning is primarily supportive care, but if acute sympathomimetic or serotonergic toxidromes are present, management is urgent—for specific management of sympathomimetic toxidrome, see here and for serotonergic toxidrome, see here.
Initial resuscitation with attention to airway, breathing and circulation may be required in severe cases (see Resuscitation for poisonings).
Treatment for novel stimulant drug poisoning aims to:
- control acute behavioural disturbance (eg agitation, delirium) with sedation using regimens described for the specific toxidrome
- identify and urgently treat severe hyperthermia (see Cooling for drug-associated hyperthermia)
- treat complications if they arise (eg rhabdomyolysis).
No antidotes are available for novel stimulant drugs.
