Management overview for oxalate crystal injuries and toxicity from plants
Many plants from the Araceae family (aroid plants) contain needle-like oxalate crystals in their leaves and stems, including from the genera Dieffenbachia, Philodendron, Syngonium and Spathiphyllum (see Common plant-derived toxins for common plant-derived toxins). These plants are common household plants with large fleshy leaves. They are often accidentally ingested by toddlers, but usually in small amounts resulting in short-term irritation.
Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) is an oxalate-containing fruit and, when consumed in large amounts, the oxalate crystals can cause obstructive nephropathy, acute kidney injury and acute neurotoxicity.
