First aid
In suspected funnel-web spider bite, manage airway, breathing and circulation urgently, with particular attention to cardiovascular instability, coma and respiratory compromise (see Resuscitation for poisonings).
If a patient has been bitten by a funnel-web spider, arrange rapid transport to a hospital that has funnel-web spider antivenom.
In all cases of suspected funnel-web spider bite presenting within 4 hours, apply a pressure bandage with complete immobilisation of the affected limb and the patient. Apply a broad (15 cm) bandage over the bite site, then wrap distally and proximally to cover the whole limb, using the same pressure as for a sprained ankle. An elastic bandage, if available, is preferred to the more widely available crepe bandage.
The patient must be completely immobilised in order for bandaging to be effective. The pressure bandage should only be removed once antivenom therapy has started.
Ensure the patient’s tetanus immunisation status is up to date.
