Observation and patient disposition after theophylline and caffeine poisonings

For poisoning due to theophylline or caffeine, admit all patients who have ingested more than 30 mg/kg. Patients who have ingested more than 30 mg/kg of theophylline may require management in an intensive care unit with haemodialysis facilities.

Discharge other patients if they have no signs of theophylline or caffeine toxicity and a normal ECG at least:

  • 6 hours after ingestion of an immediate-release preparation
  • 12 hours after ingestion of a modified-release preparation.
