Treatment for hypertension and tachycardia
Treat sympathomimetic-associated hypertension and tachycardia with titrated intravenous benzodiazepines (see Sedation).
If hypertension persists despite sedation, for adults, use:
glyceryl trinitrate 10 micrograms/minute by intravenous infusion. Increase the rate by 10 micrograms/minute every 3 minutes until systolic blood pressure is less than 160 mmHg up to a maximum rate of 100 micrograms/minute. sympathomimetic toxidrome
If the maximum rate of glyceryl trinitrate is reached before the systolic blood pressure returns to normal, seek advice from a clinical toxicologist on the use of other antihypertensives (eg beta blockers).
For children in whom hypertension persists despite sedation, seek advice from a clinical toxicologist regarding dosing of glyceryl trinitrate and the appropriate blood pressure target.
