Observation and patient disposition after insulin poisoning
Admit patients with hypoglycaemia due to insulin poisoning. Discharge them 8 hours after glucose therapy is no longer required.
Discharge asymptomatic patients who have not required treatment for hypoglycaemia after:
- at least 6 hours of observation for poisonings due to short-acting insulin formulations
- at least 18 hours of observation for poisonings due to longer-acting insulin formulations.
For poisonings due to longer-acting insulin formulations, discharge the patient in daylight hours.
