Observation and patient disposition after metformin poisoning

After metformin poisoning, if the patient is asymptomatic and has a normal serum pH and blood lactate concentration, observe them for:

• at least 6 hours after ingesting an immediate-release preparation
• at least 12 hours after ingesting a modified-release preparation.

If the patient remains asymptomatic during this observation period, they can be discharged.
