If a patient has haematemesis, melaena or hypovolaemic shock in the context of a possible button battery ingestion, suspect aorto-oesophageal fistula, which can be fatal. Start intravenous fluid resuscitation or a blood transfusion urgently. Immediately refer the patient for endoscopic removal of the button battery.
