Overview of Irukandji syndrome
Irukandji syndrome is classically associated with stings from the jellyfish, Carukia barnesi. This species is found in northern Australia; however, other jellyfish species have been associated with Irukandji syndrome elsewhere in Australia.
The effects of Irukandji syndrome include delayed severe generalised pain that usually takes 6 to 12 hours to resolve. Cardiac involvement is uncommon and, if it occurs, may require supportive care for 2 to 3 days.
