Causes and clinical presentation of other jellyfish stings
Other common jellyfish occurring in Australian coastal waters include:
- mauve stinger (Pelagia species)
- hair jellyfish (Cyanea species)
- jimble (Carybdea rastoni) and other box jellyfish (eg Chiropsalmus species).
These jellyfish cause minor effects similar to bluebottle jellyfish (Physalia species). Effects reported after stings from these species may include:
- immediate, intense local pain, lasting 1 or more hours
- a linear red eruption at the sting site, lasting 1 or more days.
Systemic effects are uncommon following these stings.
