Management of complications of alcohol use

Complications of alcohol dependence that may require management include:

  • cirrhosis and its complications such as varices and coagulopathy
  • hypertension
  • peptic ulcer diseaseHaber, 2021
  • malnutrition and malabsorption
  • thiamine deficiency; supplementation is required to limit development of peripheral neuropathy and risk of Wernicke encephalopathy
  • neuropsychiatric disorders such as acquired brain injury or alcohol-induced mood disorder.
