Prevention of CAP in adults

Consider preventive strategies for adults with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Preventive strategies include:

• up-to-date immunisation against pneumococcal disease, influenza and COVID-19 – see the Australian Immunisation Handbook
• stopping smoking
• exercise, nutrition and management of obesity
• medication review to identify drugs that have been associated with an increased incidence of pneumonia (eg proton pump inhibitorsLambert, 2015, benzodiazepines and other sedativesDang, 2015)Tolppanen, 2016
• assessment of and, if relevant, reduction of aspiration risk – see Prevention of aspiration pneumonia for strategies.
