Introduction to three-phase antifungal therapy for cryptococcosis

Three-phase antifungal therapy involves consecutive phases – induction, consolidation and eradication (or suppression in patients who are persistently immunocompromised). The duration of each phase is dependent on the Cryptococcus species and whether the patient is immunocompromised. For more information, see Three-phase antifungal therapy for cryptococcosis.

Three-phase antifungal therapy is recommended for patients with:

  • cryptococcal meningitis
  • pulmonary cryptococcosis with extrapulmonary disease (eg cryptococcaemia, central nervous system involvement, endophthalmitis)
  • severe pulmonary cryptococcosis (eg extensive consolidation, respiratory compromise, multiple nodules).
