Invasive amoebiasis
The mainstay of therapy for invasive amoebiasis is rehydration in combination with antiamoebic therapy.
Antiamoebic therapy involves initial treatment with either tinidazole or metronidazole, followed by the luminal drug paromomycin to eradicate cysts and prevent relapseKikuchi, 2013La Hoz, 2019. Although tinidazole is only available in Australia via the Special Access Scheme, it has been shown to be more effective than metronidazole and has fewer adverse effectsGonzales, 2019.
