Exit-site and tunnel infections associated with peritoneal dialysis catheters increase the risk of peritonitis. Therefore, measures to prevent and treat these infections are important.

Antibiotic therapy can increase the risk of fungal peritonitis in patients on peritoneal dialysis – use of prophylactic antifungal therapy is recommended.
