Prevention of peritoneal dialysis exit-site and tunnel infections

The risk of exit-site and tunnel infections associated with dialysis catheters is reduced by ensuring patients and healthcare workers practice meticulous hand hygiene before accessing peritoneal dialysis catheters. The risk of infection may also be reduced by cleansing exit-sites with antiseptic solution (eg chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine) or soap and waterCampbell, 2017Chow, 2023.

A Cochrane reviewCampbell, 20171Campbell, 2017Chow, 2023 concluded that nasal or topical mupirocin, or topical gentamicin, to prevent exit-site or tunnel infection or peritonitis was of uncertain benefit because of the low quality of available studies.
