Practical information on using ethambutol

Ethambutol is used to treat tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial infections, including Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).

Ethambutol can cause optic neuritis; test visual acuity and colour vision before starting treatment, and instruct patients to report any changes in vision. Ethambutol must be stopped immediately if visual symptoms occur.

For discussion on monitoring ethambutol therapy for tuberculosis, see Monitoring tuberculosis therapy.
