Endocarditis caused by viridans streptococci and S. bovis group with penicillin MIC 0.125 mg/L or lower
The following empirical regimens are included in this topic for endocarditis caused by viridans streptococci and S. bovis group with penicillin MIC 0.125 mg/L or lower:
- standard regimen for native valve endocarditis
- penicillin hypersensitivity regimens for native valve endocarditis
- standard regimen for prosthetic valve endocarditis
- penicillin hypersensitivity regimens for prosthetic valve endocarditis.
Additionally, treatment recommendations for native valve endocarditis caused by viridans streptococci and S. bovis group with penicillin MIC 0.125 mg/L or lower are dependent on whether the native valve endocarditis is considered uncomplicated or complicated. Native valve endocarditis is considered:
- uncomplicated if there is rapid response to treatment, and no large vegetation (ie vegetation is smaller than 10 mm in adults) or extracardiac infection
- complicated if there is large vegetation (eg 10 mm or greater in adults) or perivalvular abscess, or there are secondary septic events or multiple emboli.
