Aetiology of vascular graft and stent infections
Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are the most common pathogens associated with vascular graft and stent infections. However, the pathogen varies depending on the surgical site. For example, infections at aortofemoral sites or in the setting of graft–enteric erosion or fistula are often associated with gram-negative bacteria (in some cases Salmonella species)Kilic, 2016Wilson, 2016.
Infection associated with coronary artery stents is uncommon.
