Modification and duration of therapy for vascular graft and stent infections

Modify therapy for vascular graft and stent infections based on the results of culture and susceptibility testing. The optimal duration of therapy has not been established and depends on:

  • the risk of imminent rupture
  • the location of the vascular graft or stent
  • whether the graft or stent can be surgically removed without major morbidity.

For grafts and stents that cannot be removed, a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks of antibiotic therapy is usually recommended – seek expert advice. Long-term oral antibiotic therapy following the completion of intravenous therapy is required for some patients (particularly when a stent or prosthetic graft material was inserted during an active infection) – seek expert advice.
