Dosage of apixaban
Apixaban is a direct factor Xa inhibitor that is taken orally. Apixaban is significantly excreted via the kidneys so should not be used for patients with a calculated creatinine clearance (CrCl) less than 25 mL/min or severe liver impairment.
The dosage of apixaban varies according to the indication. For example:
- venous thromboembolism prophylaxis following hip or knee replacement
- venous thromboembolism treatment
- stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation.
For advice on periprocedural interruption of apixaban therapy, see Periprocedural use of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs).
