Dosage of dabigatran
Dabigatran is a direct thrombin (factor IIa) inhibitor that is taken orally. Dabigatran is predominantly excreted via the kidneys so it should not be used for patients with a calculated creatinine clearance (CrCl) less than 30 mL/min or severe liver impairment.
The dosage of dabigatran varies according to the indication. For example:
- venous thromboembolism prophylaxis following hip or knee replacement
- venous thromboembolism treatment
- stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation.
For advice on periprocedural interruption of dabigatran therapy, see Periprocedural use of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs).
