Oral therapy for tinea not on the scalp or nails

For oral therapy of tinea not on the scalp or nails, useBell-Syer, 2012:

1terbinafine 250 mg (child less than 20 kg: 62.5 mg; child 20 to 40 kg: 125 mg) orally, once daily for 2 weeks terbinafine terbinafine terbinafine

OR

2fluconazole 150 mg (adult) orally, once weekly for 6 weeks fluconazole fluconazole fluconazole

OR

3itraconazole (Itracap, Itranox or other brands equivalent to Sporanox capsules) (adult or child 20 kg or more) 100 mg orally, once daily; use for 2 weeks in tinea cruris or tinea corporis, and for 4 weeks in tinea pedis 1 itraconazole itraconazole itraconazole

OR

3itraconazole (Lozanoc capsules) (adult) 50 mg orally, once daily; use for 2 weeks in tinea cruris or tinea corporis, and for 4 weeks in tinea pedis1 itraconazole itraconazole itraconazole

OR

4griseofulvin 500 mg (child older than 1 month: 10 mg/kg up to 500 mg) orally, once daily for 8 to 12 weeks2. griseofulvin griseofulvin griseofulvin

If tinea is particularly hyperkeratotic or on hair-bearing areas of the body, longer treatment duration may be needed.

Griseofulvin is a less effective but cheaper alternative that needs to be used for longer (ie 8 to 12 weeks).
