Monitoring and reviewing strategies for challenging behaviour
A behaviour baseline and regular review by the behaviour support practitioner is necessary to confirm the hypothesised function of the person’s behaviour, and to evaluate the effectiveness of behaviour support and pharmacological interventions.
For advice on monitoring antipsychotic drugs, see Pharmacological interventions.
It is important that all those involved (ie the person, family members, carers, allied health professionals, service managers) understand their individual responsibilities with respect to implementation and monitoring the behaviour support program.
Parents and carers may benefit from educational interventions to facilitate engagement with behaviour support for people with developmental disability. There are a number of evidence-based programmes to support parents of children with challenging behaviour, and some can be adapted for use with carers (eg Stepping Stones, Triple P).
