Surveillance for autism spectrum disorder
For advice on developmental surveillance and the general assessment of developmental delay and disability, see Assessing development delay and disability.
Consider the possibility of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) if there are concerns about development or behaviour in an individual, while being mindful that there may be other explanations. It is important to take individual, parent or carer concerns about behaviour or development seriously, even if they are not shared by others. If ‘red flags’ for autism are identified, refer for further investigation; see Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
A screening tool such as the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ-10) can be used in people of all ages who do not have intellectual disability. This is available in child, adolescent and adult forms; see [URL].
Note: An autism screening tool can be used in people who do not have intellectual disability.
