Interstitial fluid glucose monitoring systems

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and flash glucose monitoring systems are worn on the skin and periodically measure the glucose concentration in interstitial fluid. Interstitial fluid contains glucose transported from the capillaries and reflects capillary blood glucose concentrations but with a time delay of between 5 and 10 minutes. At a given point in time, interstitial fluid glucose concentrations are not necessarily equal to capillary blood glucose concentrations. Over a longer time period, interstitial fluid glucose concentrations show the pattern of blood glucose concentration fluctuations so they can provide more information about glucose concentrations and fluctuations than intermittent self-monitoring of blood glucose concentrations.
