Who to treat for hepatitis C
All patients with hepatitis C, defined by the presence of HCV RNA in blood using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, should be considered for treatment, except those with limited life expectancy (less than 12 months) due to comorbidities not related to hepatitis C or the liver. In patients with cirrhosis, treatment should be started as early as possible.
Note: All patients with hepatitis C in Australia should be considered for treatment.
Certain patients should be referred to a specialist for treatment—see Which patients to refer for specialist management.
