Variceal band ligation
Endoscopic variceal band ligation may be considered for patients:
- with varices at imminent risk of rupture at endoscopy
- who have a contraindication or intolerance to beta blockers
- who are nonadherent to beta blocker therapy
- in whom adequate reduction in heart rate is not achieved with beta blockers.
Endoscopic band ligation should be repeated every 2 to 6 weeks until varices have been obliterated. Regular endoscopy (every 6 to 12 months) is indicated to check for recurrence.
