Introduction to cervical myelopathy

Myelopathy refers to any neurological deficit of the spinal cord. Cervical myelopathy is the most common form, and usually results from a midline disc herniation, spondylosis, or ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament resulting in narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of the spinal cord in the cervical region. This condition occurs more commonly in older people.

Management of cervical myelopathy often requires urgent surgical decompression to prevent progressive and permanent neurological damage. Urgently refer all patients with suspected cervical myelopathy for neurosurgical assessment.
