Contraception in individuals with migraine with aura

Combined hormonal contraception is contraindicated in individuals with migraine with aura because it further increases the risk of stroke (UKMEC 4).
If it has been 5 or more years since the individual last experienced a migraine with aura, use of combined hormonal contraception requires expert clinical judgment or referral (UKMEC 3).
Progestogen-only methods of contraception are safe to use (UKMEC 2) for individuals with a current or past history of migraine with aura.
