Note:
PBS = Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme; TGA = Therapeutic Goods Administration NB1: List may not be complete. NB2: Nextstellis, Yaz and Zoely are packaged with 24 active (hormone) pills and 4 inactive pills. NB3: At the time of writing, these formulations are available on the PBS (all those containing norethisterone and some containing levonorgestrel). See the PBS website for current information. NB4: Seasonique is packaged with 84 pills containing ethinylestradiol+levonorgestrel 30+150 micrograms, and 7 pills containing ethinylestradiol 10 micrograms. NB5: Contraceptives containing cyproterone are only approved by the Australian TGA for use in individuals with hirsutism or severe acne. NB6: Formulations containing cyproterone should not be used for Quick Start unless pregnancy can be reasonably excluded, because there is a theoretical risk of feminisation of a male fetus. For general advice about excluding pregnancy, see Starting intrauterine contraception. NB7: Formulations containing high-dose estrogen (50 micrograms of ethinylestradiol or mestranol) pose an unacceptable risk of venous thromboembolism. They are not recommended for contraception or management of conditions such as hirsutism, endometriosis, polycystic ovary disease, premenstrual syndrome or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Their role is limited to short-term use to manage acute severe uterine bleeding. NB8: Qlaira is packaged with 26 active (hormone) pills and 2 inactive pills. It only provides immediate contraception if started on day 1 of the menstrual cycle. If started on day 2 or later, it takes 9 days to become effective. |
