Female condoms
Female condoms (also called internal condoms) are single-sized nitrile sheaths inserted into the vagina before sex to prevent sperm reaching the uterus. They provide effective protection from sexually transmitted diseases and have no contraindications. For a summary of the characteristics of female condoms, see Comparison of barrier methods of contraception.
Female condoms can be inserted up to 8 hours before sex. They have an outer ring that sits over the vulva and an internal flexible ring used to assist with placement in the vagina. The penis is guided into the condom. After intercourse, the condom is removed by twisting the outer ring to seal the condom shut before removal.
