Analgesia for endometriosis
Analgesics are first-line treatment of endometriosis-related pain; they may be used alone or together with hormonal therapies. A 3-month trial of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) or paracetamol (or a combination of both) is recommended; see Primary dysmenorrhoea for dosages. Pain may also have a neuropathic component because endometrial deposits have been shown to be innervated; correlations are seen between the degree of innervation and intensity of pain. See also Acute neuropathic pain and General principles of chronic pain management. Review response after 3 months to determine need for specialist referral.
