Laparoscopic hysterectomy for endometriosis
Hysterectomy is considered if there is evidence of adenomyosis on ultrasound (endometrial-like tissue in the myometrium) or if heavy menstrual bleeding has not responded to previous therapy.
Hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is beneficial in managing symptoms of endometriosis, but, if performed in premenopausal individuals, subsequent menopausal hormone therapy is required to protect other aspects of health (eg cardiovascular and bone health); see advice on premature ovarian insufficiency and early menopause for more information.
