Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine contraceptive device

The 52 mg levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine contraceptive device (LNG-IUD) is the most effective medical therapy for heavy menstrual bleeding; it is also a very effective and well-accepted form of contraception.

Use:

levonorgestrel-releasing IUD 52 mg inserted into the uterus. Replace every 5 years1. bleeding, heavy menstrual levonorgestrel-releasing iud    

Some irregular bleeding may be expected during the first few months after the 52 mg LNG-IUD has been inserted. If bleeding has not settled after 6 months of treatment, specialist referral is required to investigate for underlying causes. Also consider indications for earlier referral.

The 19.5 mg LNG-IUD is not indicated for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding.

1 If contraception is not required and bleeding is controlled, the 52 mg LNG-IUD can remain in place longer than 5 years.Return
