Assessment of males with low libido
In assessing low libido in males, look for evidence of contributing factors such as other sexual difficulties (eg erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation), androgen deficiency, insomnia, obesity, medications, alcohol or recreational drug use, fatigue, depression, eating disorders, relationship factors, concerns regarding gender identity or sexual orientation). See Screening and assessment for sexual difficulties for more detail on history taking and features to consider in an examination.
Laboratory investigations to consider include:
- investigations for male androgen deficiency
- thyroid function tests
- other tests for systemic illness as guided by the history and examination.
