Delayed treatment after ingestion

Acetylcysteine given within 8 hours of immediate-release paracetamol poisoning prevents hepatotoxicity in most cases. The most important risk factor for acute liver injury and death after a toxic paracetamol ingestion is a delay of more than 8 hours to acetylcysteine treatment.
