Management overview for Euphorbiaceae species injuries

Euphorbiaceae is a plant family comprising many species, including some that can cause injuries. Examples include the naked lady, pencil tree or firestick plant (Euphorbia tirucalli) and the African milk bush (Synadenium grantii) (see Common plant-derived toxins for common plant-derived toxins).

Most commonly, the milky sap of Euphorbiaceae species causes corrosive corneal injury and, less frequently, burns to the skin and oral mucous membranes. The toxins in the sap include phorbol and diterpene esters, which cause chemical irritation and an inflammatory response. The main treatments for injuries are decontamination and supportive care.
