Clinical presentation of Euphorbiaceae species injuries

Injuries due to contact with the sap of Euphorbiaceae species include:

  • ocular exposure—corrosive corneal injury with immediate pain, redness and lacrimation; delayed visual loss. Complete resolution of symptoms and signs usually occurs within 1 to 2 weeks, but cases of permanent corneal damage have been reported
  • dermal exposure—intense burning, redness, blistering
  • oral exposure—burns to the lips, tongue and mouth; hypersalivation; vomiting.
