Risk factors for toxicity

Risk factors for toxicity in theophylline and caffeine poisonings include:

  • hypokalaemia—serum potassium concentration less than 3.0 mmol/L
  • hyperglycaemia—blood glucose concentration more than 10 mmol/L
  • age more than 60 years—significant predictor of severity and poor outcome in chronic theophylline poisoning (not acute).
