Treatment for metabolic acidosis: sodium bicarbonate

In ventilated patients with severe metabolic acidosis caused by metformin poisoning, sodium bicarbonate can be given as a bridging therapy pending haemodialysis. For adults and children, use:

sodium bicarbonate 8.4% 1 to 2 mL/kg up to 100 mL (1 to 2 mmol/kg up to 100 mmol) intravenously, every 3 to 5 minutes, titrated to a serum pH of more than 7.3. Maximum total dose is 6 mL/kg (6 mmol/kg). metformin poisoning
