Toxic dose

Barbiturates have a narrow therapeutic index. Toxic doses depend on individual tolerance to a specific drug.

Normal dose ranges for adults for the common barbiturates are:

• phenobarbital (phenobarbitone)—60 to 240 mg daily
• primidone—125 mg to 1.5 g daily.
