Clinical presentation

Effects of barbiturate poisoning include:

• CNS effects—dose-dependent CNS depression (altered conscious state ranging from drowsiness to coma), areflexia, respiratory depression, apnoea
• cardiovascular effects—hypotension (due to reduced vascular resistance and myocardial depression)
• other effects—hypothermia, multiorgan failure (secondary to hypoxia).
