Management overview for pregabalin and gabapentin poisonings

Pregabalin and gabapentin are antiepileptic drugs that are also used to treat neuropathic pain. Pregabalin and gabapentin are gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) analogues, but do not interact significantly with GABA receptors. Pregabalin misuse and abuse is contributing to an increased prevalence of pregabalin poisonings.

Both pregabalin and gabapentin cause minimal toxicity in single-drug poisonings. The most common effect is sedation. Co-ingestion of pregabalin with other sedative drugs (eg opioids, benzodiazepines, illicit drugs) has a higher morbidity and mortality in poisoning.

The focus of management is supportive care. A good outcome after poisoning is expected.
