Management overview for sodium valproate poisoning

Sodium valproate is an antiepileptic drug that is also used to treat bipolar disorder and for migraine prophylaxis. The most frequent toxic effects of sodium valproate are sedation and coma. Large ingestions of sodium valproate occasionally result in multiorgan dysfunction and metabolic derangements. Severe toxicity does not occur in the absence of sedation.

Most poisonings can be successfully managed with supportive care; however, haemodialysis is a key intervention to reduce mortality in severe poisoning.
