Observation and patient disposition after sodium valproate poisoning
The minimum period of medical observation for sodium valproate poisoning varies depending on symptoms and the dose ingested:
- more than 500 mg/kg—observe for at least 12 hours after ingestion
- more than 200 mg/kg—observe for at least 8 hours after ingestion.
Discharge patients when they are alert, ambulant and clinically stable.
Drug-naive children who have accidentally ingested less than 200 mg/kg of sodium valproate can be discharged if they are asymptomatic and can be supervised in a safe environment.
Sedative drugs can continue to cause significant cognitive impairment for several days following exposure. Advise patients not to drive or operate machinery for at least 3 days after discharge.
