Observation and patient disposition after baclofen poisoning
Admit patients with respiratory depression, coma, delirium or seizures due to baclofen poisoning to an intensive care unit. They may require prolonged admission.
Admit any patients who have ingested more than 200 mg of baclofen to hospital for observation.
Observe all asymptomatic patients with baclofen poisoning for at least 6 hours after ingestion.
Patients who take baclofen long-term are at risk of baclofen withdrawal if the drug is withheld. Withdrawal symptoms include myoclonus, seizures and delirium. Consider restarting the patient's maintenance therapy soon after baclofen toxicity has resolved.
Sedative drugs can continue to cause significant cognitive impairment for several days following exposure. Advise patients not to drive or operate machinery for at least 3 days after discharge.
