Clinical presentation

Bupropion poisoning is characterised by severe agitation and aggression, and a significant risk of seizures, which can be delayed up to 24 hours after ingestion.

Effects of bupropion poisoning include:

  • gastrointestinal effects—nausea, vomiting
  • central nervous system (CNS) effects—agitation, aggression, seizures, hallucinations, tremor
  • cardiovascular effects
    • hypertension and sinus tachycardia (common)
    • hypotension, QRS widening and arrhythmias after ingestions of more than 9 g of bupropion.
