Management overview for GHB poisoning

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is an illicit drug used for its sedative and euphoric properties. It is usually ingested as a precursor drug, such as gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) or 1,4-butanediol, which the body rapidly converts to GHB.

GHB produces a rapid onset of euphoria. It has a steep dose-response curve, and recreational doses can easily cause toxicity. The risk of toxicity is increased if GHB is taken with other sedatives such as alcohol. GHB toxicity can cause coma and respiratory depression that can be life threatening. However, with good airway management and supportive care, a rapid and full recovery is expected.
